Fluoride is an important mineral, especially for children. Our mouths contain bacteria that use sugars in the food we eat and the drinks we drink to produce an acid that damages our teeth. Fluorine protects our teeth. But too much fluoride can cause something called dental fluorosis.

Dental fluorosis is a slight change in the appearance of teeth, usually in the form of very faint white marks. It is usually a mild form that is painless and does not affect the health or function of the teeth. Fluorosis only occurs when fluoride is consumed before 8 years , while permanent teeth are still forming under the gums . This is why children should be taught to spit out toothpaste and not swallow it.

So what do you need to know about fluorosis today? Children who eat a typical diet, drink fluoridated water, and use properly fluoridated dental products will get the fluoride they need to have healthy teeth.
