What are gingivitis and periodontitis?
They are two very common diseases, most of the population has ever suffered them, both gingivitis and periodontitis affect the gums, they are caused by accumulation of bacteria and tartar.
● Gingivitis It results when the infection affects only the gum, it becomes inflamed, reddens and begins to bleed. So that this does not happen we must prevent it, if it is not treated in due course the safest is that periodontitis appears.
● Periodontitis It occurs when gingivitis has not been treated in time, and it also affects the gums, causing periodontal pockets, reaching the bone and the root. This oral disease can be detrimental to our health, that is why we must always go periodically (preferably every 6 months) to the reviews recommended by our Odonto Stetic Dental Clinic
What are the causes of these diseases?
The main cause is the accumulation of bacteria between the gum and the teeth.
There are other types of factors that cause the development of these diseases, such as:
● Tobacco contains very toxic substances such as tar, nicotine and many more that produce a greater accumulation of bacterial plaque, greater wear on the tooth bone, making the smoker have more accumulated and more aggressive bacteria.
● Hormonal changes in women, such as pregnancy, can negatively affect the gums during this state.
● People with diabetes often have gingivitis or periodontitis since they are more sensitive to oral infections.
Tips from our doctors to avoid these diseases:
Tips to avoid as much as possible this type of disease:
Avoid foods that contain excessive sugar, if consumed, do so at meals or snacks and never before going to bed.
It is very important to brush your teeth in a correct way three times a day with a good toothpaste, in addition you must always influence the dental cleaning at night since this is the most important.
It would be ideal to reduce alcohol as much as possible and the consumption of tobacco, since these two habits help to promote oral cancer.
If you have piercings you have to pay attention to them as these can cause tooth wear, bacteria formation, etc.
Visit the dentist as much as possible every 6 months or 1 year for a routine checkup.
What treatments are there to cure periodontitis?
Periodontitis is treated by thoroughly cleaning when there is no bone loss, the basic treatment is to clean the mouth with local anesthesia.
In our clinic for these cases we use the curettage technique, it consists of cleaning and removing excess bacterial plaque from under the gums using the appropriate materials. It will always be done with local anesthesia, since it is a comprehensive and thorough cleaning, after curettage the already disinfected gum reattaches itself to the tooth, preventing bacteria from reintroducing itself.
For more severe periodontitis cases in which there is considerable bone loss, a previous study must be done to see what treatments must be carried out.
PERIODONTIC TREATMENT
Frequent questions Periodontics
PD is an infectious disease caused by the bacterial flora found in the mouth. Affects and destroys the supporting tissues of the tooth (gum, periodontal ligament and bone).
The treatment of PD must be carried out by experts exclusively in Periodontology. In our dental clinic, Dr. Mercedes Durán, a specialist in Periodontology, will be in charge of professionally treating your case.
The treatment consists of decrease the level of pathogenic bacteria found in the mouth. By means of mini-instruments and using minimally invasive techniques, periodontal disinfection treatment is carried out, by which the bacteria that have accumulated under the gum are eliminated.
In some cases, depending on the type of PE, it is necessary to perform microsurgery in certain areas of the mouth to restore tissues that have been damaged or to access very deep areas.
These microsurgical treatments are carried out with state-of-the-art microscopes and surgical microinstrumental instruments, thereby reducing their aggressiveness and possible postoperative discomfort, and the use of any type of sutures can be frequently suppressed.
This type of treatment is performed under anesthesia., so that the patient DOES NOT FEEL any PAIN during the process. You will only notice the application of anesthesia and, even so, a previous anesthetic is usually administered so that it is not painful.
The symptoms of PD are clear to a professional, but sometimes difficult to detect initially by the patient.
The inflammation of the gum, the bleeding brushing your teeth or flossing your teeth bad breath, the gum retraction and the tooth mobility are some of them.
Gingivitis and periodontitis are different stages of the same periodontal disease, which affects the gums and teeth. The main difference is that periodontitis is the advanced level of the disease, where there is a higher level of damage and tissue destruction than in gingivitis.
When you have periodontal disease, you are evaluated on how advanced you are. It is always recommended annual reviews, As minimum, to be able to detect these conditions in time and avoid destruction of the mandibular bone volume and affected teeth.
Gingivitis can be solved with an easier and cheaper cleaningFurthermore, since it is only the initial stage of periodontal disease, there is no immediate risk of tooth loss.
In the case of periodontitis, the accumulated tartar bacteria spread into the gum, causing periodontal pockets. If caught early, it can be fixed with a scaling or root planing, It removes all infection and tartar from periodontal pockets. If you let it go uncontrollably, you may have to extract teeth.
The most common periodontal diseases are gingivitis and periodontitis. Most of the population will suffer from periodontal disease throughout their lives.
